Here at Casa Spruce, we have a large backyard that, to be frank, was a mess. We’ve spent most of our first years here cleaning it up and making it usable. It had a nasty chain link fence, poison ivy everywhere, a dilapidated basketball hoop, aaand a large tree that recently fell right over during a storm. Oh, and we had to do some major fixes on the septic tank which meant digging up a huge area of the yard.
Now that my husband got rid of the chain link, put up wood fences, and mostly tackled the poison ivy (that stuff is tenacious!) we are finally getting to make more fun updates. We are going to add a fire pit area for late night hangs and a bocce ball court (which will really be a drainage area in disguise). Here are the backyard plans we’ve drawn up.
The house is situated at the bottom of the diagram (unseen) and there’s further green space up top that I didn’t include because we’re going to leave it alone for now. This is obviously not to scale but serves as a good planning tool. I’m really inspired by this spot for our fire pit area (substituting a fire pit for the round table she uses).
I like the idea of using pea gravel as an inexpensive substitute for pouring another concrete pad. I’m also loving that hammock – so pretty! I’m hoping we can finish up the area this weekend so we can enjoy it while we still have some warm months left. I’ll be sure to post a final reveal of the finished fire pit area!
